Music Maestro Music has been in my blood forever. I want children to experience music in all they do with me: listening, singing, playing, creating, moving, reading and recording. I follow the Orff approach to music education. This means always starting with the words and ideas of the children themselves, then finding the rhythms, melodies and harmonies that emerge out of those. I play various instruments, write songs and listen to a wide variety of musical styles and genres. |
Jenna Aalbers Team Leader Room 18 Year 3/4 I worked at Western Heights for 3 years in the Junior School before taking time off to study Full Time Dance and Fitness in Australia. Outside of school I love dancing (Hip Hop is my favourite), water skiing, and running my Bootcamp fitness classes. I am an ex pupil of Western Heights I am now back at WHS as Team Leader of our Middle School. |
Room 20 Year 5/6 I was born in Northern Ireland and am one of 8 children. I came to New Zealand in1988 as an exchange teacher. I taught in a Polynesian school in Mangere for a year and during that time I was fortunate to visit the islands of Rarotonga, Nuie, Samoa and Tonga. This was an insight into the lives of these Polynesian children. I enjoy implementing Inquiry based learning into all the subject areas. I encourage my children to be independent learners and take responsibility of their learning. I have high expectations of each one of them. I really love teaching at WHS and I have been at WHS for 16 years. |
|
Room 25 Year 5/6 Before WHS, I spent nine years teaching at Sunnyvale Primary School as senior teacher in the year five and six syndicate, and was their Sports Coordinator. I enjoy teaching all areas of the curriculum, especially literacy as I am passionate about reading. I am the WHS Sports Coordinator along with Nuree Greenhalgh. I really enjoy working with her to organise school sports events and to help maintain Western Heights’ outstanding level of sporting achievement. |
Room 23 Year 5/6 I embarked on a path of study to enable me to leave NZ and head to Japan to do study Japanese in Tokyo. My experience assisted me when I was located to the wintery North of Japan to teach English to for three years. I am interested in literacy and helping students to understand the power of words and what they can do. The English language is full of fun, interesting words and subtle nuances which I enjoy teaching children to embrace and control so as to articulate and express their ideas with accuracy. |
Jessie Eyre Literacy Leader Room 22 Year 5/6 Jessie is our in-school Literacy Leader for our Community of Learning Schools. She teaches year five six, runs our library (both brilliantly) and is a Marriage Celebrant in her spare time. |
Room 26 Year 4/5 I have been teaching for 18 years now and still absolutely love it! My dream was always to be a teacher. I am married to James and we have two gorgeous daughters, Hayley and Sophie. I used to represent New Zealand in 400m and 800m on the track. Running is still a huge part of my life. I feel very blessed to be teaching at Western Heights Primary School. We really are one big family. |
Alannah Lupe-Houben Team Leader Room 24 Year 5/6 Each teaching day brings new challenges, learning, excitement and fun. I started as a Junior School Teacher and have taught all year levels. I believe that Reading, Writing and Maths are the most important areas and children need to have a strong foundation and knowledge of these before they leave Primary School. I always refer to my class, as my kids because that’s how I feel about them. I maintain high expectations for myself as well as my class - behaviour, independence, responsibility and learning. |
Part Time Teacher My role at Western Heights is a unique but special one. I release a variety of teachers and this enables me to teach across a variety of levels within the school, which I love. I really enjoy seeing that moment when something 'clicks' within a child and watching the sense of pride and achievement they feel. |
